MBTA Gameday

Harvard IACS

The MBTA facilitates 1.3 million trips in the Boston area on a typical weekday, and sees large spikes in demand during sporting events and other games. A solid understanding of these spikes is essential for proper accommodation of large crowds. Select a team and sets of games below to see how station entries change around game time. Entry lift describes the boost that we might attribute to a game.

This project was developed for CS 171 at Harvard, using data from a collaboration with the MBTA as part of AC 297r. The following video explains our design approach as a part of CS 171. A broader discussion of our work—including further analysis of the effects of sports on MBTA ridership—may be found at our MBTA Capstone website.
